ORID O-ring Material Identifier
£115.00
The ORID (O-Ring Identifier) is a tool designed to identify the material composition of O-rings without causing damage. It operates by measuring the rebound height of a weight dropped onto the O-ring, which varies based on the material’s properties. This method allows differentiation among common elastomers such as EPDM, Nitrile (Buna-N), FFKM, and FKM/Viton®.
How to Use the ORID:
- Preparation:
- Place the O-ring on a stable, flat surface.
- Ensure the O-ring is within its rated shelf life and is undamaged.
- Operation:
- Position the ORID tool vertically over the O-ring.
- Raise the internal weight to the top of the tube.
- Release the weight, allowing it to drop onto the O-ring.
- Interpretation:
- Observe the height of the first bounce of the weight.
- Compare this bounce height to the calibrated markings on the ORID tool to determine the material:
- Highest Bounce: EPDM
- Second Highest: Nitrile
- Third Highest: FFKM
- Lowest: FKM/Viton®
This non-destructive testing method is particularly useful for verifying O-ring materials during installation, checking for mislabeled O-rings, and sorting applications.
Considerations:
- The ORID is calibrated for O-rings with a hardness between 60 to 80 Durometer.
- It is not suitable for identifying failed, damaged, or out-of-date O-rings.
- Accurate readings depend on proper technique and a stable testing surface.
